Flawed Facial Recognition
Porcha Woodruff, an aesthetician and nursing student, was preparing her children for school when she was arrested for carjacking based on facial recognition.

The only problem? She was innocent.

According to a Georgetown University study, despite its advancements, AI has shown a disproportionate bias and error regrading the misidentification of Black and Asian individuals.

Biased AI Impacting Lives
Six known individuals, all Black, have been wrongly accused due to incorrect facial recognition matches resulting in the loss of jobs, scholarships and freedom.

Overdependence on AI can lead to investigation biases, sidelining other potential leads.

One example is Michael Williams, who was wrongfully arrested for murder based on an AI-driven ShotSpotter alert.

The video platform, teased a new Gen AI featured dubbed ‘Dream Screen’, an experimental feature that lets creators add AI-generated video or image backgrounds to their shorts.

Like many Gen AI startups, Runway, a text-to-video platform, doesn’t disclose where it sources the data it uses to train its models, arguing that it’s protected by the ‘Fair Use Doctrine.’
To remove themselves from future legal challenges, a handful of AI vendors have added ways for artists to opt out of model training, while others have started communal funds to share some of the revenue generated.

FUNDING

Gizmo, a Gen AI learning startup that gamifies quizzes to engage students, announced $3.5 million in seed funding led by NFX, Ada Ventures, and Capital T.
Gizmo generates quizzes from a user's class notes or pulls information from PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, web pages, and YouTube videos.

MICROSOFT

Microsoft announced yesterday its newest product, ‘Microsoft Co-pilot,’ which merges interfaces on Windows with its language models.
The solution will work as an app or reveal itself by right-clicking and is available as an enhancement on Bing or as an enterprise solution.
