Good Morning from the Promptbox Team

Good news, everybody! BitBoy was released after only 8 hours in the slammer. $BEN is up .3%. Whew.

Anyway, we have more important things to discuss, like the CIA creating a chatbot to sort through your data - which will certainly be used to spy on us illegally and OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman developing wearable AI tech to work with ChatGPT.

This literally could be the prequel to any Sci-Fi dystopian feature flick.

It’s Wednesday. Let's get it.

Sept 27, 2023

In a recent revelation, the CIA and other US intelligence agencies are gearing up to deploy an AI chatbot like ChatGPT (but evil) to navigate the massive amounts of public data more effectively.

This move seeks to streamline the search for relevant information - but who or what decides what is relevant remains to be seen.

It also raises questions about privacy and data acquisition methods - especially in the wake of the FBI's notorious record of hundreds of thousands of illegal searches on innocent US citizens.

ā

ā€œThe scale of how much we collect and what we collect on has grown astronomically over the last 80-plus years, so much so that this could be daunting and at times unusable for our consumers,ā€

Randy Nixon, CIA’s director of Open Source Enterprise

Key Developments:

  • Features and Capabilities

    • Enables agents to look up information, pose follow-up queries, and condense vast data.

    • The system will source its answers to verify authenticity.

  • Access and Distribution

    • The AI tool will soon be distributed across the 18-agency U.S. intelligence community.

    • Not accessible to lawmakers and the general public.

  • Privacy Concerns

    • The definition of "public data" remains ambiguous.

    • Past incidents of federal agencies bypassing warrants to acquire data raise alarm.

  • Global AI Competition

    • China's ambition to lead in AI by 2030 potentially influencing U.S. actions.

    • U.S. counters with AI Bill of Rights and significant investments in AI research.

The balance between protection and privacy becomes more precarious by the day, and with the definition of privacy rapidly evolving (not in our favor), we must decide where we, as citizens, draw the line.

The Question

With AI chatbots sifting through vast amounts of public data, how much further will our already diminishing privacy be eroded?

Promptbox’s Top Trending AI Stories:

GENERAL

A St. Louis newspaper decided to take on the artificial intelligence debate by allowing a chatbot to pen an op-ed arguing against the use of AI in journalism.
"One of the main reasons why AI should not be used in journalism is that it can undermine the credibility and trustworthiness of news," the AI bot wrote. "AI can generate fake news, manipulate facts, and spread misinformation."

STRIKE OVER

The Writer’s Guild strike has come to an end after five months of picketing, with a tentative deal approved for new conditions that include negotiations over AI usage.
Companies must be transparent with writers when AI-generated content is given to them or incorporated into a project. The WGA says it ā€œreserves the right to assert that exploitation of writers’ material to train AI is prohibited by MBA or other law.ā€

FUTURE TECH

Apple’s former chief design officer, Jony Ive, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are allegedly exploring opportunities to collaborate on building an unspecified artificial intelligence ā€œhardware device.ā€
there’s currently no word on what the device will be, or what purpose it serves. Sources claim that Ive and Altman, who are friends, have been discussing what ā€œnew hardware for the AI age could look like.ā€ It’s currently unclear if the device will be created by OpenAI.

SPOTIFY

Spotify announced a new AI feature that can translate podcasts into different languages using the host’s own voice.
The tech, which relies on OpenAI’s latest updates to ChatGPT, can create ā€œrealistic synthetic tonesā€ from just a few seconds of speech.

VALUATION

OpenAI is in discussions to possibly sell shares in a move that would boost the company’s valuation from $29 billion to somewhere between $80 billion and $90 billion.
In April, OpenAI picked up just over $300 million in funding from backers such as Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, at a valuation of $29 billion. That was separate to a big investment from Microsoft announced earlier this year, believed to be around $10 billion.
