In an alarming sign for ChatGPT's dominance, upstart AI app Character.ai has rapidly caught up in monthly mobile usage, attracting over 4 million monthly active users in the US compared to ChatGPT's 6 million.

This meteoric rise for the DIY AI app, launched just this May, is driven by overwhelming adoption among younger audiences. Nearly 60% of Character.ai's users are aged 18-24, embracing the chance to design their own AI companions.

ChatGPT still leads globally but has seen concerning declines in website traffic. As Character.ai cements its foothold among Gen Z users eager to customize AI, its future looks increasingly bright.
