Brief: FraudGPT, an AI bot designed for offensive purposes such as spear phishing and creating cracking tools, is being advertised by cyber threat actors on dark web marketplaces and Telegram channels.
This new tool takes cybercrime capabilities to a new level, potentially enabling novice actors to perform sophisticated attacks.
"While organizations can create ChatGPT (and other tools) with ethical safeguards, it isn't a difficult feat to reimplement the same technology without those safeguards," Krishnan noted.
Details:
FraudGPT, advertised for a subscription cost of $200 a month, has been circulating since July 22, 2023, according to cybersecurity firm Netenrich.
The tool, whose creator claims has seen over 3,000 confirmed sales and reviews, can purportedly write malicious code, create undetectable malware, and find leaks and vulnerabilities.
The advent of AI tools like FraudGPT and WormGPT, designed to promote cybercriminal activities, are increasing concerns about sophisticated cyber attacks.
These tools could escalate the phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) model and make it easier for newcomers to the field to launch phishing and business email compromise (BEC) attacks on a large scale.
What's Next: As per Netenrich security researcher Rakesh Krishnan, "Implementing a defense-in-depth strategy with all the security telemetry available for fast analytics has become all the more essential to finding these fast-moving threats before a phishing email can turn into ransomware or data exfiltration."
As such, organizations must ramp up their cybersecurity measures and stay vigilant to these rapidly evolving threats.
