THE BIG STORY
Can AI Create or Only Imitate Art?
Harvard creatives debate AI art's emerging promise and limits.
The rise of AI image generators has sparked debate on whether computer-created works qualify as real art. Harvard faculty across artistic fields see AI as a both a threat that could displace artists and a tool that may enhance human creativity. But most feel true art requires original vision and emotion, attributes that AI lacks (for now).
The Bullets:
Mimicry Risk: Novelist Daphne Kalotay says AI can mimic styles but lacks lived insight great writing requires.
Spontaneity Limits: Saxophonist Yosvany Terry says AI lacks the emotion and improvisation critical to music.
Analog Appeal: Animator Ruth Lingford believes audiences want to see the recognizably "human hand", though AI may someday simulate this.
Context Counts: Mixed-media artist Matt Saunders says AI art meaning derives from human framing, and many artists are already using it.
Magic Missing: Architect Moshe Safdie doubts AI can holistically synthesize like great architecture requires.
āPeople also predicted the audienceās fatigue with the look of AI. It was noticeable that a high proportion of films shown at this yearās festival were made using recognizably analog techniques ā stop-motion, animated painting, etc. ā and this seems like a reaction against the dominance of computer-generated imagery in the last years. We do seem to want to see evidence of the human hand."

Whatās Next:
While AI art raises difficult questions, creatives feel human guidance is still required for greatness. Harnessing AI as a tool while retaining agency over expression may enable an ethical artistic transition.
But how can we encourage responsibility and oversight while allowing space for experimentation with this emerging medium?
